You will require this information when you want to add new tags or categories to content types that do not currently have any associated with them.

Step-by-step guide to adding categories for a content type that does not currently have any categories assigned to it:

  1. Navigate to the taxonomy library on your website from the 'Choose action' menu - ensure that you are logged in, and have the relevant editing rights.
  2. You will be taken to the 'Taxonomy library' page. This page will list the content types that you already have categories and types set up for. 
  3. Using the 'Add new' drop down on the edit bar at the top of the page, select 'Categories'. You will be taken to a page with two fields.
    1. 'Type name' - the field to select which content type you would like to add categories for.
    2. 'Available categories' - the field to populate with the categories that you would like to be available for the selected content type.
  4. Select the content type that you would like to add categories for from the 'Type name' field.
  5. Next, add the categories that you would like to tag your content with in the 'Available categories' field. Add the catgeories one per line.
  6. Once you have added your categories, click 'Save'.
  7. You will be taken to a page where you will be able to add, edit or remove any of the available categories.


Step-by-step guide to adding types for a content type that does not currently have any types assigned to it:

  1. Navigate to the taxonomy library on your website from the 'Choose action' menu - ensure that you are logged in, and have the relevant editing rights.
  2. You will be taken to the 'Taxonomy library' page. This page will list the content types that you already have categories and types set up for.

  7. You will be taken to a page where you will be able to add, edit or remove any of the available types.

Step-by-step guide to add categories or types a content type that already has some categories available in the taxonomy:

  1. Navigate to the taxonomy library on your website from the 'Choose action' menu - ensure that you are logged in, and have the relevant editing rights.
  2. You will be taken to the 'Taxonomy library' page. This page will list the content types that you already have categories and types set up for. 
  3. Select the group of categories that you would like to add a new category to e.g. 'Research group categories'
  4. You will be taken to a page where you can add new categories, amend currently available categories, assign categories to items of content or delete categories.
  5. To add a new category to the available ones, enter the name of the category in the 'Add new category' field at the top of the listing, and then click the green '+' button to save the new category.
  6. You will now see the new category that you have added in the list of available categories for the content type that you have chosen. You will now find this option available when adding or editing an item of content for which you have added the category.
  7. From this page, you can also apply the category in bulk, replace the category (change its name but maintain the tag on the content already categorised with this), or remove the category completely.
