This feature is enabled / disabled at the exam level and may be helpful for candidates who are accustomed to highlighting text in paper-based exams. Candidates can use this feature in P4B to highlight key components in their item stem or answer. The highlighted text does not have any impact on their submitted responses.

Setting-up the text highlighting function

  • When setting up an exam (navigate to ‘Edit exam details’) you will see the option to enable highlighting of text.

  • Please note: this feature is enabled / disabled for the entire exam (except Reading Time) and for all candidates.

Enabling highlighting in ‘Edit Exam Details’

Enable highlighting

Candidate use of highlighting in P4B

  • When enabled, candidates can use this feature to highlight key words or phrases in a stem or potential answer.

  • To use the highlighter a candidate selects the text to be highlighted by placing the cursor over the text and holding down the left click for the selection, releasing when finished. They then click on the highlighter in the top ribbon to activate the highlighting function for the selected text.

  • To remove the highlighting, a candidate selects the text again, using the left click held down and clicks on the ‘unhighlight’ control to remove.

  • Highlighting is retained between items, candidates returning to an item will see any previous highlighting.

  • Candidates must still actively select their correct response. Highlighting text is NOT an alternative to selecting an item choice.

Examiner use of highlighting in P4B

This feature is also available for those in the role of Examiner during an OSCE for highlighting sections of the mark sheet. Highlighting of resources in P4B is not available.

Notes:

  • If reading time is applied to an examination, the highlighting feature is not available to candidates during reading time.

  • A candidate can submit their response irrespective of whether any text is highlighted or not

  • Candidates must still actively select their correct response. Highlighting text is NOT an alternative to selecting an item choice

Tips and / or troubleshooting:

Highlighting is a precise tool, to edit or remove a highlight a user must select the exact same text to unhighlight - as shown in the clip below.
