This section describes various types of observation criteria which can be used on the OSCE mark sheet with examples of the usage of each type.

Discrete

Discrete criteria type represents list of options from which the examiner selects none (when not mandatory) or single option. Options displayed to the Examiner are defined by the marking scheme for the observation criteria. Discrete type is the most common type used in OSCE mark sheets.

Example example uses:

• Single selection from multiple options (when mandatory)
  • Questions grading student with Good/Average/Bad
  • Question with Yes/No answer
• Single selection from single option (when not mandatory)
  • This is equivalent with the Boolean type
• Borderline marker
  • Where marking schema could be Bad Fail/Fail/Borderline/Pass/Good Pass

Boolean

Boolean type represents question with Yes or No answer. Usually this type of criteria is used non mandatory so it is up to the Examiner to select the criteria or skip it.

Boolean type is equivalent to the non mandatory Discrete type criteria with single option. to select, like Candidate is dressed properly shown in the example marksheet.

Example example uses:

• Most commonly used grouped into single section to represent check list
  • Pre-defined Examiner feedback statements which Examiner quickly highlights
  • Tick list of symptoms / drugs (Hypertension,Hyperlipidaemia,Smoking,Diabetesmellitus)

Free Text

Provides a text box for the Examiner to input text. There is no limit in terms of the length of the text Examiners can type into the text box. It is possible to indicate that the Examiner feedback is presented to the candidate or is private just for the Exams team.
